Backseat Driver Program

Why a Backseat Driver Contest?
For the eighth year in a row, the Maine Department of Transportation has asked Maine 4th-grade classes to be Backseat Drivers! We know kids love to tell their parents what to do. By teaching them about good driving skills, we can make sure that the message goes home to adult drivers in the household.

How does the contest work?
We've asked students to design a poster that displays what they've learned about safe driving in Work Zones. Seven regional prizes of $200 each will be awarded during Work Zone Safety Week in April. Regional prize winners have their posters shown on this web site and the public votes for the grand prize winner - $1,000 for the class to use on a field trip or any other classroom need. Last year's winning poster is from Mrs. Hasson's fourth grade at Holy Cross School.

NEW! Safety Calendar
Your poster could be showcased in the Backseat Driver Safety Calendar! MaineDOT now publishes a full-color, 12-month calendar highlighting the best artwork from the contest. The calendar is distributed throughout the State of Maine, so don’t miss this opportunity to have your work seen by hundreds of Maine students, teachers, and parents! To request a copy of the 2008 calendar (featuring 2007 poster contest winners and entries), please contact Lorraine.

What are the regions?
We've divided Maine into seven regions by county, grouping the counties both by proximity and by population. They are:
